Building & Facilities Assistant
$20 an hour – Part-time
The Plain City Public Library is hiring one individual to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming library facility by performing all routine custodial tasks, groundskeeping, routine maintenance, and semi-skilled repairs on building interior and exteriors. The successful candidate will conduct routine facility and property inspections and communicate with contractors who perform landscaping, snow removal, HVAC maintenance, refuse and recycling services, hardscapes and parking lot maintenance, contracted custodial services, and other contractors when needed. Approximately 50% of work must be completed when the library is closed to the public. QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess experience in basic maintenance and troubleshooting and be able to perform basic repair tasks including but not limited to drywall, painting, plumbing, carpentry, electricity, etc. Must be able to work an assigned schedule with occasional flexibility for library events. Must be able to respond to emergencies as needed. Must furnish own transportation. All applicants must sign a public employee ethics agreement and submit to a criminal background check and drug screening. Employment will be considered permanent upon the successful completion of a 6 month probationary period.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Must possess the ability to follow written and oral instructions and effectively communicate with contractors and staff in person, by phone, or other digital means. Must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance and meet all applicable safety standards.
TYPICAL DUTIES: Examples of routine facility maintenance include but are not limited to: replacing batteries and bulbs; assembling and moving furniture and equipment when needed; clearing roof and gutter debris; reporting inventory of custodial supplies, and condition of tools and equipment; watering landscapes and keeping walkways clear of snow, ice, or debris; quickly responding to reports of facility issues; emptying waste cans and disposing of trash/recycling; dusting, vacuuming, sanitizing high touch surfaces; washing windows and cleaning kitchen and bath areas; spot treating carpet/upholstery stains; other duties as assigned. In addition to routine work hours must be able to provide set-up and tear-down for special events with advanced notice.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; carry, hold or pull material above the shoulders and below the knees; Ability to climb a ladder or use a step stool; to stand, walk, crawl, kneel or bend for extended periods of time.
